Ask The Experts: At What Point Does It Stop Being A Compromise And Start Being “Taken For Granted?”
When communication is not being used to come to an understanding. When people start to assume and not fully consider how the other feels. A compromise is when both parties don’t get everything they want and both give in a little. A compromise should never feel like a sacrifice. Often for women they use the word compromise when they mean sacrifice. One shouldn’t have to make sacrifices in a relationship. This normally occurs when one party feels like they’ve given up everything they hold dear to them, such as values, identity, time or career, and the other person hasn’t conceded on anything. This isn’t sustainable. So if you are in an interaction where you are the person who is constantly giving in and the other person concedes nothing, then they are taking you for granted. Time to stop compromising.
