Love Jones – New singles night in London! From a woman’s perspective…
I wasn’t brave enough to go on my own, so bought two pairs of the ‘Two-of-a-kind’ tickets and invited my girl friend and two single guy friends. The event did say they wanted an equal balance of women to men…
We arrived in good time, and of course I headed straight to the bar to get me a glass of red wine! I was starting to feel a little like “what the hell am I doing here?!” This was my first ever time at a singles-to-mingle type event. My girl friend felt the same, so we ‘clinked’ our wine glasses! My single guy friends were like boys in a candy shop – just ogling the girls and thanking me for the last minute invite. Typical men!
The host said his welcomes at the advertised starting time which was good. I had already seen one or two faces I recognised from the London social scene (clubbing and online networks), and as the night went on, more people wandered in. The first game was a bingo game, where you had to go around the room and ask a person of the opposite sex one of the questions on the sheet, and if the response was favourable, you would then cross off the question until all the questions were crossed off then “BINGO”! This was a good ice breaker game as I was forced to walk around the room and ask random people random questions, whilst noting their names in the process. Of course, as a great believer of ‘liquid courage’ I had to do a quick pit stop at the bar for a Sambuca shot first as the red wine was not working fast enough!!
The second game we played was a Lock & Key game where ladies each had a padlock and the men a key. So the basis of the game was to walk around and simply find which key unlocks which padlock. Once unlocked, the pair hand in the matching lock and key, and are re-issued with another one each. Once again there was a lot of interaction, but more so the guys just walking around sticking their keys into a girls padlock. There were a lot of sexual innuendos with this game as you can imagine, with most of guys proclaiming their keys to be too big or too fat! I had to giggle, but that was probably the effects of the wine slowly creeping in…
The third and final game was a wedding vows game. We each had to be in pairs and write a wedding vow to your chosen ‘partner’. This game was fun, because it showed a little more character and personality of each person. Some vows were extremely sweet and thoughtful, while others were very playful and funny, and the rest short and succinct! Each person had to say their vow out loud into the mic with the rest of the room quietly listening.
The games sessions did go on a tad bit too long, or maybe I felt that way because I didn’t seem to “hit it off” with anyone other than the bartender! However, I have to admit the wedding vow game does go down as my favourite game of the night. The MC was also full of jokes and kept hyping the crowd to get interactive, despite his poor quality mic.
It was an enjoyable night, though I would have liked for the lighting to be a little brighter as I think it’s good to see the details of faces at such events, so one can study their prey from a distance before they head to mingle!
